MANUEL: Finding Family and Flavor at Refettorio Merida

Refettorio is more than a communal kitchen; it's a sanctuary that unites communities and fosters connections. Part of the Food for Soul initiative, Refettorio takes surplus food and transforms it into nourishing meals that heal both body and soul. The true beauty of Refettorio lies in the sense of belonging it creates for those it serves. Let's meet Manuel, an unemployed man in Mexico, who has found a family at Refettorio Merida and discover his Food Saved Me story.

Meet MANUEL

In the bustling city of Mexico, Manuel has faced the challenges of unemployment. But amidst those challenges, he found solace and a sense of family at Refettorio Merida.

Manuel's connection to Refettorio is profound and heartfelt, as the place has become more than just a source of food for him. "It’s all lovely, it feels like family. We have made good friends and it’s very lovely to come here, our hosts are really great," Manuel shares. His love for Refettorio's hamburgers is more than just about taste; it's about the community that gathers around the table.

A Gourmet Experience

"The food here is very tasty and various, it’s also gourmet and full of side dishes like vegetables. There’s pasta, bread, fish, seafood, meat… and the dessert is delicious!" Manuel explains. His excitement about the meals served is a testament to the quality and care put into each dish.

Manuel's Approach to Food

Manuel's relationship with food goes beyond the doors of Refettorio. He shares his own approach to cooking and food conservation. "I cook simple things like eggs with ham, chorizo, picadillos. If I have leftovers I keep them for the day after!" Manuel says, emphasizing the importance of reducing waste even in the simplest of meals.
